Madeira Airport’s $12 million terminal modernization project had completed in late May of 2016, introducing a new shopping area and doubling the passenger screening area, waiting and passenger verification area. With the upgraded operations such as additional passenger and baggage screening lines, the airport was able by this time to process 1,400 passengers per hour. To add to these, Madeira Airport changed the layout of their departure lounge to allow more flexible Schengen and non-Schengen flights, and improved their Duty Free, having added 1,800 square meters to accommodate new stores in their commercial area.
